The magic of fairy tale and realism: Selma Lagerlöf in Russia

Abstract

The acquaintance of Russian readers with the works of Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf (1858–1940, Nobel prize – 1909), which combined neo-romanticism, realism and modernism, Сhristian message and fairy-tale, took place on the wave of discovery of Scandinavian literature in Russia at the end of the nineteenth – beginning of the twentieth century during the Silver Age and Russian religious revival. The study of Lagerlöf’s entrance into the “foreign pantheon” of Russian literature reveals the mechanism of Russian and Swedish cultural interaction, the specifics of different stages of Lagerlöf perception in Russia – at the beginning of the twentieth century, in Soviet and post-Soviet times.
