Twists and turns of Madeleine Scudéry’s literary fate

Abstract

The article offers a study of the reception of one of the most famous précieuse French writer, Madeleine de Scudéry. Her personality and artistic heritage have been interpreted in different ways, sometimes contradictory. The article specifies her role in literary process of the seventeenth century, analyses some features of précieuх behavior and style, considers the problem of attribution of her novels. Madeleine de Scudéry’s work not only enriched the French language, developed the poetics of high baroque novels, but also contributed to the new type of short stories. Her ideas also influenced a view of her contemporaries on marriage based on mutual respect, contributed to women’s movement that anticipated modern feminism.
