The article examines the problem of formation and specificity of drama as a genre in the works of A.N. Ostrovsky. The plays, the genre of which is designated as drama, are listed in chronological order. It is noted that the time spread between the writing of the plays allows us to identify the development of the drama genre and the specificity of its development. The author of the article finds a fairly close connection between the events in the dramas and the personal life of their author, A.N. Ostrovsky. This connection largely fills the series of events in the plays with the sincerity of human feelings. The specificity of the conflict is determined by the clash of the main characters’ will not so much with society but with the historical and cultural code and Christian traditions. Among five plays in the drama genre, the motive of death determines the dramatic nature of the conflict situation in four of them. It is revealed that the main participants in conflict situations in Ostrovsky’s dramas are female characters.
