Poetry, the highest form of the national language (Etkind), is considered to be a verbal art in which, in addition to linguistic boundaries, other boundaries of a certain system of units are con-structed, which create additional levels of signification. Prosodic modifiers associated with meaning-making can be a pause at the end of a verse, a pause in a caesura and other types of pauses. The article analyses the phenomenon of poetic speech organisation connected with the mismatch of metrical, graphic and linguistic boundaries of verbal material: syllabic transfer (Kviatkovski), which some French verse scholars call ‘metrical tmesis’ (Backes). The elevation of syllabic transposition to an ancient rhetorical figure, which implies the dissection of a compound word or a idiomatic expression into two parts by inserting one or more words, makes us think about the status of transposition and space in the poetic text, its role in the process of signification.
