Abstract

W. Eilenberger’s book, written in the philosophical and biographical genre, is about four ‘magicians’ of philosophy of the past century – Ludwig Wittgenstein, Ernst Cassirer, Martin Heidegger and Walter Benjamin. In Eilenberger’s view, these German-speaking thinkers have had the most lasting influence on contemporary European philosophy and the scientific and humanities disciplines, and at the same time are both ‘existentially’ and ‘socially’ involved in their time.

Keywords

L. Wittgenstein; M. Heidegger; E. Cassirer; W. Benjamin; philosophy of language; cultural history.
