The period specified in the title of the work provides the researcher with a rather compact and at the same time diverse dramaturgical material devoted to the era of Nero (it is easy to guess that the plots of all these dramatic works in one way or another go back to the Annals of Tacitus). The author selects for the study only those plays in which Nero is presented as an off-stage character: these are, first of all, the works of A. Herzen, L. Mey and A. Maikov, between whom also there is a genetic connection; both this and the peculiarities of their poetics are the focus of the author’s attention.
