Abstract

English scholar Jonathan Bate studies the classical con-text of Shakespeare’s works. The author argues that classical literary tradition was a part of the living cultural environment for the play-wright and his audience. Selecting its most influential figures like Ovid, Horatio, Seneca, Tacitus, Cicero, and Virgil he explores its impact on Shakespeare.
