Abstract

Irmtraud Huber explores aesthetic effects of the present tense in contemporary novels. The author identifies four main varieties of narrative present, showing its complex and multifaceted effect on the reader. She convincingly refutes the common view that the proliferation of the narrative present is a transient fashion that impoverishes contem-porary narrative literature.
